Advice from your apothecary:
Although melatonin helps with sleep, it is NOT a sleeping pill . It should only be used after speaking with your pharmacist or pediatrician and having previously implemented healthy sleep habits that do not involve medication.
Children's sleep problems can be solved with good bedtime routines. Routines can be specific to your child and their age, but they should occur every night at roughly the same time. This will help your child understand that it's time to wind down and go to sleep.
The key to a successful bedtime routine is consistency.
Some ideas for bedtime routines:
- Listen to a story.
- Listening to relaxing music helps a lot
- Establish fixed times for bedtime, wake-up time, and naps.
- The room should be quiet and cozy
- Give them half an hour's notice before the agreed-upon bedtime, so they get the idea...
- Establish a play and meal time, keeping in mind that there should be a quiet period of about half an hour before bedtime.
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine before bedtime
- Allowing your child to carry items such as stuffed animals or blankets can also help your child feel safe and relaxed.
If you're struggling to establish a good bedtime routine for your child, talk to your pediatrician to see if there are other issues that could be causing your child's sleep difficulties.
